There is no doubt in my mind that a car can be a work of art, and even more so when there is an individual behind it.

Most people identify with men like Enzo Ferrari, W.O. Bentley, Ettore Bugatti – they all started with nothing and stuck passionately to their individual vision. It shows in their work.

The Bugatti is a perfect example. Made by an Italian family of artists and sculptors, the Bugatti cars still take the breath away. Ettore Bugatti received classical art instruction, then taught himself engineering and began building racing cars.

Aesthetics seemed to be as important to him as technology. His cars have boldly styled bodies, and even the engines look like modern sculptures. The Antlantique was designed by his son Jean in 1936, but as it nears age 60 it still looks as futuristic as ever. Jean Bugatti was killed in a car crash and his father lost his business during the war, but their artistic cars remain as their legacy.

The Antlantique is like no shape I’ve ever seen – with rounded contours, and a studded seam along the top, it’s truly a remarkable vision. On a race track today, it can still do 100 mph without any trouble at all.

Only three of these cars were ever built. One was demolished when it got stuck at a railway crossing. Ralph Lauren, the fashion designer, owns the second and I don’t know where the third one is, if it exists at all. I have only seen pictures of the car, and that was enough to start my heart racing.

When a young man grows up in North America I think it is unusual for him not to be car crazy. I can remember vividly to this day all the cars my father had from the time I was ten years of age. There was a 1940′s Hudson coupe, a 1946 Dodge sedan, a 1949 Mercury, a 1954 Buick Century with the port holes on the side of the hood, and so on…

In those days I would sit with my friends and count the cars that went by. ‘Look, there goes a Studebaker’; ‘There’s an Olds’; ‘There’s a Lincoln’. Now most cars look alike. If they didn’t have the small individual logos on the trunk I wouldn’t be able to tell a BMW from a Toyota Camry. There are, of course, exceptions, and most of those fall within the sports car world.

I remember fondly my own cars of the past. In the 1950′s it was a Triumph TR3 and in the 1960′s it was a 1963 Stingray Corvette, with the slat in the back window.

There’s nothing like waking up on a nice sunny day, and going for a drive on a country road, and putting a good sports car through its paces.

The pleasure is not about trying to go fast – it’s the feeling of handling a thoroughbred: the way it comes around a corner, the way the mechanism feels when you shift, and, of course, the roar of the engine.

Each of the great cars that I remember from the past had a distinctive character. I can readily call to mind the Alfa Romeo, the little Morgan, the Long-nosed D-type Jaguar, the Porsche 356 Roadster – some of the most beautiful cars in the world.

Now cars are sold at auction just like works of art, and the prices they command are getting higher and higher. As they become expensive antiques I hope all of them don’t get taken off the road. It would be sad to see them all locked up in large storage vaults or glass cases – after all, they were designed to be driven!

For those who don’t know, the term white elephant refers to anything that has only imaginary or perhaps aesthetic value for the owner, but has no practical or functional value. When applied to any Japanese used car for sale, it seems to merit quite some thought.

To answer the question, one possible answer a collector of used Japanese cars might give is: no, my used Japanese cars still have practical and/or functional value. How so? Well, perhaps this car collector is still able to get some mileage out of his Japanese used cars. Perhaps on weekends, he brings one of his Japanese used cars out of his garage and takes his family out for a trip to church, or on a picnic to a nearby park, or even a bit further away to a beach for an afternoon of water-based activities. For such a person, his used Japanese cars would not be white elephants in the strictest sense of the use of the term because the vehicles can still be used though perhaps not as regularly as newer cars.

Another answer a collector of used Japanese cars would give would be the opposite: yes, my used Japanese cars are actually white elephants, in the sense that I do not derive any practical or functional value out of them. Many used cars are gas guzzlers, because their engines are not as efficient at burning fuel as when the cars were new. Others have deficiencies in car design that make them too bulky and too large for fuel efficiency.

If you spend an inordinate amount of money upgrading, renovating and taking care of your used Japanese cars, perhaps you need to examine your reasons for owning such vehicles in the first place. If you just like to look at them once in awhile (when you have leisure time on your hands), then leave them locked away for months on end, then perhaps you may need to ask yourself whether that is enough reason to hold on to your collection.

Some people go to great lengths to preserve the quality of their cars (regardless of what country made them) because they want to be able to use them for a long time. Then they sell their cars because they need to upgrade their mode of transportation to more efficient and less troublesome cars of newer make. In that sense, cars would not be white elephants because they do serve practical and functional purposes for the owners while they can still run. But what happens when your used Japanese cars completely die on you, meaning their engines go kaput with no hope of being fixed anymore? That is a fate that all vehicles (and their owners) have to face eventually.

In that case, the only real value your used Japanese cars would have would be if they were sold for scrap, or as spare parts for other used Japanese cars. If you seem to have become emotionally attached to your car, it may take time though before you can let go – but all of us have to let go of our material possessions at some point. Some just do a better job earlier than others.

Fuel and propulsion technologies
A radio taxi in New Delhi. A court order requires all commercial vehicles including trucks, buses and taxis in India to run on Compressed free articles directory Natural Gas See also: Alternative fuel vehicle

Most automobiles in use today are propelled by gasoline (also known as petrol) or diesel internal combustion engines, which are known to cause air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climate change and global warming.[14]

free articles directory

Increasing costs of oil-based fuels, tightening environmental laws and restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions are propelling work on alternative power systems for automobiles. Efforts to improve or replace existing technologies include the development of hybrid vehicles, and electric and hydrogen vehicles which do not release pollution into the air.

free articles directory

Petroleum fuels Main article: Petroleum fuel engine Diesel Main article: Diesel engine

Diesel-engined cars have long been popular in Europe with the first models being introduced as early as 1922 [15] by Peugeot and the first production car, Mercedes-Benz 260 D in 1936 by Mercedes-Benz. The main benefit of diesel engines is a 50% fuel burn efficiency compared with 27%[16] in the best gasoline engines. A down-side of the Diesel engine is that better filters are required to reduce the presence in the exhaust gases of fine soot particulates called diesel particulate matter. Manufacturers are now starting to fit[when?] diesel particulate filters to remove the soot. Many diesel-powered cars can run with little or no modifications on 100% biodiesel and combinations of other organic oils.

Gasoline Main article: Petrol engine
2007 Mark II (BMW) Mini Cooper

Gasoline engines have the advantage over diesel in being lighter and able to work at higher rotational speeds and they are the usual choice for fitting in high-performance sports cars. Continuous development of gasoline engines for over a hundred years has produced improvements in efficiency and reduced pollution. The carburetor was used on nearly all road car engines until the 1980s but it was long realised better control of the fuel/air mixture could be achieved with fuel injection. Indirect fuel injection was first used in aircraft engines from 1909, in racing car engines from the 1930s, and road cars from the late 1950s.[16] Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is now starting to appear in production vehicles such as the 2007 (Mark II) BMW Mini. Exhaust gases are also cleaned up by fitting a catalytic converter into the exhaust system. Clean air legislation in many of the car industries most important markets has made both catalysts and fuel injection virtually universal fittings. Most modern gasoline engines also are capable of running with up to 15% ethanol mixed into the gasoline – older vehicles may have seals and hoses that can be harmed by ethanol. With a small amount of redesign, gasoline-powered vehicles can run on ethanol concentrations as high as 85%. 100% ethanol is used in some parts of the world (such as Brazil), but vehicles must be started on pure gasoline and switched over to ethanol once the engine is running. Most gasoline engined cars can also run on LPG with the addition of an LPG tank for fuel storage and carburettor modifications to add an LPG mixer. LPG produces fewer toxic emissions and is a popular fuel for fork-lift trucks that have to operate inside buildings.

The hydrogen powered FCHV (Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle) was developed by Toyota in 2005 free articles directory Biofuels Main articles: Biofuel, Ethanol fuel, and biogasoline

Ethanol, other alcohol fuels (biobutanol) and biogasoline have widespread use an automotive fuel. Most alcohols have less energy per liter than gasoline and are usually blended with gasoline. Alcohols are used for a variety of reasons – to increase octane, to improve emissions, and as an alternative to petroleum based fuel, since they can be made from agricultural crops. Brazil’s ethanol program provides about 20% of the nation’s automotive fuel needs, as a result of the mandatory use of E25 blend of gasoline throughout the country, 3 million cars that operate on pure ethanol, and 6 million dual or flexible-fuel vehicles sold since 2003.[17] that run on any mix of ethanol and gasoline. The commercial success of ‘flex’ vehicles, as they are popularly known, have allowed sugarcane based ethanol fuel to achieve a 50% market share of the gasoline market by April 2008.[18][19][20]

When you stop to consider that some of the fastest and most expensive cars on the market come from overseas this seems like a stupid question. Americans probably still consider the Corvette to be the true American Sports car as a two seater built mainly of fiberglass and just about all motor.

Italians have the right to be boastful of their accomplishments with the beauty and performance of the Ferrari line, no none can question that they are a force in the sports car market, albeit and expensive one. If you were to ask a German who builds the best sports cars they have the cars to back an argument as well, from the Bugatti to the Porsche Turbo Carrerra GT the Germans have introduced a long line of true sports cars to the world market.

We can’t forget the Japanese influence of late, from Nissan’s Z car series going back to the original 240Z when they were called Datsun, to the 360Z of today they have remained dedicated to offering a pure sports car. Toyota was once a dominant force with the popularity of the Toyota Supra, especially the turbo model but they have become more focused in the sedan market. Mitsubishi has been continually introducing new sports cars and they seem to be more focused on the young auto buyer, the Lancer EVO featured in the Fast and The Furious movie makes their case well.

Sports cars have been a global phenomenon since before the start of mass production when cars were considered just for fun or sport. There were cross country rallies all over the globe where independent car makers would test their cars and their skills against each other.

After World War II the big cross country rallies were added to with one on one races like the street races in the United States that were glorified by movies like Rebel Without A Cause and later films like Grease. Usually these races would occur in the wee morning hours when the roads were fairly empty and racers would sometimes race for the pink slips or titles of their cars.

In Europe the races happened on the long and winding country roads that are all over the Old Country. And now the Japanese began entering the fray, due in large part to the concern over the price of gas in the United States, the Japanese brought quality and performance to new levels while showing that both could be done while offering decent fuel economy.

The love of sports cars is even growing in the Middle East where Maserati has found a dependable niche market among the rich young oil barons. The Maserati Quatroporte is especially in demand among the young drivers there.

In a world of differing opinions and political views the sports car seems to be a common unifier all across the planet.

Most automobiles in use today are propelled by gasoline (also known as petrol) or diesel internal combustion engines, which are known to cause air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climate change and global warming.[14] Increasing costs of oil-based fuels, tightening environmental laws and restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions are propelling work on alternative power systems for automobiles. Efforts to improve or replace existing technologies include the development of hybrid vehicles, and electric and hydrogen vehicles which do not release pollution into the air.

Petroleum fuels Main article: Petroleum fuel engine Diesel Main article: Diesel engine free articles directory

Diesel-engined cars have long been popular in Europe with the first models being introduced as early as 1922 [15] by Peugeot and the first production car, Mercedes-Benz 260 D in 1936 by Mercedes-Benz.

free articles directory

The main benefit of diesel engines is a 50% fuel burn efficiency compared with 27%[16] in the best gasoline engines. A down-side of the Diesel engine is that better filters are required to reduce the presence in the exhaust gases of fine soot particulates called diesel particulate matter. Manufacturers are now starting to fit[when?] diesel particulate filters to remove the soot. Many diesel-powered cars can run with little or no modifications on 100% biodiesel and combinations of other organic oils.

Gasoline

free articles directory

Main article: Petrol engine

The hydrogen powered FCHV (Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle) was developed by Toyota in 2005 Biofuels Main articles: Biofuel, Ethanol fuel, and biogasoline

Electric Main articles: Electric car, Hybrid vehicle, and Plug-in hybrid
The Henney Kilowatt, the first modern (transistor-controlled) electric car.
2007 Tesla electric powered Roadster
Tata/MDI OneCAT Air Car
A CNG powered high-floor Neoplan AN440A, run on Compressed Natural Gas

The first electric cars were built around 1832, well before internal combustion powered cars appeared.[21] For a period of time electrics were considered superior due to the silent nature of electric motors compared to the very loud noise of the gasoline engine. This advantage was removed with Hiram Percy Maxim’s invention of the muffler in 1897. Thereafter internal combustion powered cars had two critical advantages: 1) long range and 2) high specific energy (far lower weight of petrol fuel versus weight of batteries). The building of battery electric vehicles that could rival internal combustion models had to wait for the introduction of modern semiconductor controls and improved batteries. Because they can deliver a high torque at low revolutions electric cars do not require such a complex drive train and transmission as internal combustion powered cars. Some post-2000 electric car designs

Sports cars are fascinating vehicles. Their features make them stand out among other car types. But there still is competition among sports cars. It is fascinating to talk about these sports cars and why they stand out above their contemporaries.

Here are some of the 2006 vehicles that made the list of best sports car and the qualities that made them above average.

- Audi A3 2.0T

This car goes beyond the beauty of its exterior. Car enthusiasts appreciate the car’s responsiveness and agility.

Audi A3 2.0T comes with an intercooled, turbo charged engine with 2.0 liter capacity and 16 valves. The car promises to deliver power up to 197 mph at 5100 rpm.

Other features include a six speed manual transmission, front-wheel type of driveline, 101.5 in. wheelbase and curb weight of 3300 – 3350 lbs.

- Chevrolet Corvette

The car’s V-8 engine (7.0 liter) with 16 valves allows for greater speed, and because the car is lighter than regular cars, the Chevrolet Corvette is capable of accelerating up to 125 mph in 12 seconds within one-fourth of a mile.

The car’s braking system is impressive. The car’s reflex is also astounding.

The car comes with the following specifications: rear-wheel type of driveline, and curb weight within 3100 – 3300 lbs.

-Honda Accord

The car comes with its fresh look: revised interiors, rear and front styling, and better sound-minimizing capability.

Honda Accord still boasts of its qualities such as high value for resale, excellent construction and reliability.

V6 Accords are equipped with a new stable system and improved suspension.

This car also has the following specifications: front- wheel type of driveline, 3100 to 3600 lbs. curb weight, up to 107.9 in. wheelbase and 5 or 6 speed manual transmission.

- Porsche Boxster

The Porsche Boxster speaks well about its balance. Pair this quality with an increase in power delivered by its 24-valve DOHC engine with 2.7 liters capacity.

The braking system is as remarkable as is the car’s over-all aggressive appeal.

Other features of the car include:

A rear-wheel type of driveline, 95.1 in. wheelbase, and curb weight within 2900 -3100 lbs.

Truly, sports cars did evolve and they will continue to evolve as long as there is competition. Car enthusiasts can expect more remarkable features in sports cars as years go by.

platforms (with interchangeable brakes, suspension, and other parts) were common. Even so, only major makers could afford high costs, and even companies with decades of production, such as Apperson, Cole, Dorris, Haynes, or Premier, could not manage: of some two hundred American car makers in existence in 1920, only 43 survived in 1930, and with the Great Depression, by 1940, only 17 of those were left

In Europe much the same would happen. Morris set up its production line at Cowley in 1924, and soon outsold Ford, while beginning in 1923 to follow Ford’s practise of vertical integration, buying Hotchkiss (engines), Wrigley (gearboxes), and Osberton (radiators), for instance, as well as competitors, such as Wolseley: in 1925, Morris had 41% of total British car production. Most British small-car assemblers, from Abbey to Xtra had gone under. Citroen did the same in France, coming to cars in 1919; between them and other cheap cars in reply such as Renault’s

10CV and Peugeot’s 5CV, they produced 550,000 cars in 1925, and Mors, Hurtu, and others could not compete.[13] Germany’s first mass-manufactured car, the Opel 4PS Laubfrosch (Tree Frog), came off the line at Russelsheim in 1924, soon making Opel the top car builder in Germany, with 37.5% of the market.[13]

For those who like speed, should be interested also with sports cars. This type of car has high speed, but still fancy driving in the city center. Here are ten fastest sports car from www.supercars.org versions.

1. Carera Porsche GT

German output of this car can go up to 336 km/hour. Also, only take as much as 3.9 seconds to reach 100km/jam. Until now, only 1270 people in the world who have it. This is the fastest and most expensive Porsche.

2. Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

Like an elegant Italian design cars, Lamborghini adds speed in it. Look at the acceleration that can reach 100km an hour in just 3.3 seconds. 343km/jam maximum speed of this car.

3. Pagani Zonda F

Insuring sports cars is an expensive feat for several reasons. For one, these cars normally are higher in value than many other cars, and this means that if you have a fender bender – or worse yet, total the car – the insurance company has to pay a higher amount out than they would if you drove a different vehicle. Another reason these cars are so expensive is that they were made with speed and maneuverability in mind. Fast drivers zooming in and out of traffic inevitably cause a higher percentage of accidents, and they are also more likely to get tickets as well.

While the cost for insuring sports cars is higher than insuring other types of vehicles, the good news is that you can shop for cheap auto insurance online. Most people shop for premium quotes with the same core group of companies, and these are the big names that pop into mind when you think of auto insurance companies. However, buying the equivalent of name brand insurance inevitably will result in you paying more than you need to for coverage. You can take some time to shop for cheap auto insurance online and get quotes from some of the companies you likely have overlooked in the past. These are reputable companies with a customer service-oriented philosophy, and they offer very competitive premium rates to earn your business.

When you find quotes for cheap auto insurance online, you will want to take time to research the companies. This is especially true when working with any company that you are not familiar with. However, once you have done research on the companies and have great quotes for more affordable coverage, there is no reason not to pull the trigger and start saving money on your sports car coverage premium!
